Judiciary HIV Committee Reaches Out to Two Families Affected by HIV
(L): HW Kwizera(Registrar, Inspectorate), Dr Stephen Watiti (R) with the family
As part of the activities of the Judiciary Health Awareness Camp at Luwero High Court, members of the Judiciary HIV/AIDS Committee this afternoon carried out a community outreach where they visited two families affected and infected by HIV/AIDS.
The two families who reside in Kasana and Kakoge in Luwero District were identified by the Uganda Aids Commission (UAC). The families shared tales of how they are struggling to cope with challenges of living with HIV/AIDS.
The team that was led by the Inspector of Courts, HW Amos Kwizera, who was representing the Under Secretary and Chairperson of the Judiciary HIV Committee, Ms Maureen Kasande. He was accompanied by health experts from the Ministry of Health and the UAC. The first meeting was a family where both husband and wife and two of their six children are HIV positive.
In their small rented house, the family depends on the good will of good samaritans to get by and occasionally the harvest from their small garden. The couple’s children have failed to go back to school this term for lack of Shs110,000.
Dr Stephen Watiti, an HIV/Aids activist who has been living positively for the last 35 years, encouraged the family to faithfully take their Antiretroviral (ARV) treatment so as to lead normal and healthy lives.
HW Kwizera handed to the family, an assortment of food items on behalf of the HIV/AIDS Committee and a cash contribution. The visibly overwhelmed family extended gratitude to the Judiciary for reaching out to them.
The same support was extended to another family, where Ms Christine Nakiwala takes care of her three-year-old epileptic grandchild who is also HIV Positive. The little boy who is recovering from a partial stroke was abandoned by his mother when he was one-year-old and now relies on his grandmother for his well-being.
Ms Nakiwala could not believe that strangers could take interest in the plight of her grandson and reach out to them.
The Community Outreach project is one of the Corporate Social Responsibility activities by the HIV/AIDS Committee as a way of reaching out to the indigent infected and affected by HIV in different communities.
